Wherever our feet will take us

In this blog my friend a "new pensioner", and I, a school teacher on a Sabbatical, will share our short exploratory excursions in the surroundings of the Jordan Valley near the Sea of Galilee. Both of us, having lived in the area for more that 25 years, feel we still have a lot to learn about it. Having said that, we ironically started out with a brief trip to Jerusalem.  With no specific agenda in mind we set out and started at the wonderful Mahane Yehuda market. Lots of interesting smells, lush colors, and busy noises encircled us while we had a little tea/coffee at a tiny side street. 

We continued up Jaffa Road a street that during the last 6 years had suffered a lot from the building of the tram. But now it is very pleasant to stroll down the street without any traffic at all; it is lined with shops and restaurants. We enter the Mamilla Mall and admired the expensive art and artifacts (mainly related to Hanukka) and ended up eating a delicious lunch at the  wonderful Kedma Restaurant. It is located right at the edge of the Old City overlooking the City of David.

         Pouring rain accompanied us on our way to Ein Kerem (Location) were we stayed at the Notre Dame de Sion.  The Monastery was founded by Alphonse Ratisbonne, a French secular Jew, who later converted to      Christianity and became  “Father Marie”. He wanted to "work for the “regeneration” of the people by   teaching girls all religious faiths, while respecting their consciences and making no attempts to convert them to Catholicism". 

"On 20 January , 1861 , the nineteenth anniversary of Alphonse’s vision of Marie , as he was walking on the terrace of the rented house near the Visitation , he saw a rainbow stretching from the fountain to the hill of “ des Pommiers “ (the orchard). He took this as a sign from Marie that he should buy that land, which he had already looked at. He kept the negotiations secret and used Mathias as intermediary to buy the land. Even the sisters did not know about it until 12 June 1861 when the contract was signed." 

 In the evening we went to the Cinematheque to see THE CLASS by Laurent Cantet (very very boring movie.) After a good and quiet night's sleep in the Monastery we went the Israeli Museum. A lot of see a lot to digest 2 items made a rather big impression on us: Tal Kravitz a multi-talented music performer showed and played very interesting instruments including a flute-type of instrument from the Bible time called "Mashrokit" and the Theremin .

 The second discovery was that right here in our Jordan Valley in Sha'ar HaGolan  a neolithic village 8000 years old was discovered in 2004. This then bring us back to the Jordan Valley and is our link to the next excursion.

מטיילים,מגלים,נהנים ומספרים.

השנה יצאתי לפנסיה מוקדמת.תוך כדי שיחה עם חברתי ברברה, שנמצאת בשנת שבתון,החלטנו שפעם בשבוע נצא לטייל בעמק היפה שלנו,עמק הירדן.אבל בחרנו את מסעותינו בירושלים. שוק מחנה יהודה היה התחנה הראשונה.

שוק נקי,ססגוני,מיוחד,שיש בו מכל טוב הארץ. פירות,ירקות,

תבלינים,עוגיות,ועוד. הריחות משכרים והאוויר החמה ונעימה ביום סגרירי.

יושבות בבית קפה קטן בשוק ונהנות מתה,קפה ועוגה.מדסקסות על דה והא ובעיקר נושמות את הריחות והאוויר של ירושלים.

*עזבנו את השוק והלכנו ברגל ברחוב יפו המשופץ, בו עוברת הרכבת הקלה.טיילנו לאורך הרחוב עד ממילא.

בממילא נהנות מחפצי אומנות מיוחדים כגון:חנוכיות, פסלים

ועוד המוסיפים למקום אווירה מיוחדת.

*שעת צהריים.ישבנו לאכול במסעדת קדמה  כשמולנו נשקפות

חומות עיר דוד.שתינו מתענגות על מרק עדשים מהביל,דג אפוי

בתנור וסיידר חם. אוכלות ,שותות,צוחקות,ותוהות על עתידה של ישראל באזור כל כך  נפיץ, המזרח התיכון.

לאחר דיון מעמיק הגענו למסקנה שהעתיד לוט בערפל, אך צריך לקוות שהמנהיגים המובילים במדינתנו ישכילו לשנות את חיינו בה, וגם להוביל אותנו לשלום.

אחר כך,בעודנו שבעות ומצב רוחנו מרומם, וגשם זלעפות ניתך

עלינו, מצאנו עצמנו ממתינות לאוטובוס שיובילנו

למנזר האחיות ציון .

הגשם לא הותיר לי ברירה אלא לעצור טרמפ לשכונה. בעוד חברתי המומה מההעזה שלי.אך בזכות העזה זו הגענו אל המנזר.

*המנזר הוקם בשנת 1861 על ידי אלפונס ראטיסבון,יהודי שהתנצר, ונקרא האב מארי. הוא רצה שכל בני הדתות יגיעו למנזר בשביל ללמוד על הדתות השונות מבלי לכפות את דתם על איש.

*לאחר מנוחה קלה בחדר קטן,צפוף וסגפני, כשהגשם אינו פוסק,יצאנו שוב לעיר לצפות בסרט בסינימטק.

גם פה הפעלתי את כישורי ההעזה ועצרתי טרמפ לכיוון העיר.

הגענו לסינימטק וראינו את הסרט "קירות לבנים". סרט צרפתי המתאר דינמיקה בין מורה לתלמידים מרקע סוציו אקונומי נמוך. הזכיר לנו את הדינמיקה המתרחשת בבתי הספר בארץ.סרט ארוך ומייגע, אך מעניין מבחינת התכנים והצילומים.

*למחרת לאחר ארוחה קלה, צנועה אך טעימה מאוד במנזר,יצאנו לסיור במוזיאון ישראל. בעודנו מתרשמות מהמוצגים של הארכיאולוגיה, הבחנו בסטודנטית המקבלת הסבר מהמרצה שלה על המימצאים שהתגלו בשכנותנו, בקיבוץ שער הגולן, בשנת 2004. מכאן למדנו שבין דגניה לירושלים יש לנו עוד הרבה מה לראות בסביבתנו הקרובה.
